Call for contributions.

This is a call for proposed contributions to a collection of academic
essays to be
published under the working title
Pornography, Sound and Cinema, by Equinox (UK) as part of the series
Genre, Music
and Sound.

In 2003 it was reported that in Los Angeles alone there are more than
10,000 porn
films made each year, as compared with average of 400 feature films
coming
out of Hollywood. This is, by any qualitative standard, a major film
genre. We invite submissions on any aspect of sound in pornographic
cinema. The following are speculative possibilities, not intended to
exclude any particular subject or approach to sound and pornographic
film.
Possible sections could include essays on:

1. The musicology of porn, containing articles on the use of rhythm,
funk
guitar,
vocal affectivity and sound effects;
2. Classic pornography, analyzing key films in the genre such as Debbie
Does Dallas
and Deep Throat;
3. National studies, dealing with the sonic differences between porn
from
different
places and eras;
4. Studies of the history of porn in its sonic/musical dimensions;
5. Fetishising the sound, addressing different categories of porn and
how
sound is
used in each: soft/hard core, bondage,
homosexual, fetishes etc.;
6. Production: studies of the way sound is designed and incorporated
into the
finished product, that is distinctive to the
genre;
7. Contextual studies, of for example exhibition and reception, places
and
spaces,
and their sonic corollaries.

In order to focus the collection, it is intended at this stage to give
priority to
proposals centred on movies (film/DVD/video) rather than on internet
porn.

The collection is scheduled for publication in mid-2008, and will be
edited by
Bruce Johnson, under the general series editorship of Mark Evans. We
invite proposals of up to 300 words, for articles of between 5,000 and
8,000 words. The final draft of articles will be requested by January
1st
2008 for the usual academic referee process. Please send
proposals and further enquiries to Bruce Johnson, at brujoh@utu.fi

Art Symposium Valmiera 2007, Latvia, 22-28 July 2007

Application Deadline March 15th, 2007

ART SYMPOSIUM ?VALMIERA 2007?, Latvia, 22 ?28 July 2007: applications invited from creative people in various arts disciplines.

Valmiera City Council and the Art Gallery ?Laipa? invite artists to participate in the Third Contemporary Art Symposium, which will take place in Valmiera, Latvia on the 22nd to 28th of July, 2007.

The purpose of the Symposium is to support the ongoing process of bringing a closer understanding of contemporary art issues to our community. The Symposium serves to promote involvement in the creative process through a system of recognizable values and emotions. We plan to have artists? presentations, small concerts, theatre experiments and discussions every evening. The culmination of these activities will sum up in the Grand Finale on the 28th of July in the City Square.

The book, ?Understanding Media? by Herbert Marshall McLuhan, shall serve as the theoretical basis for this Symposium. In Mc Luhan?s definition, all media are seen as ?hot? or ?cold?. A ?hot? medium is one that involves one single sense in ?high definition? but is low in participation and involvement by observers such as a photograph. (A photograph is visually ?high definition?, involving our sense of vision). ?Cold? media are high in participation, completion by the audience (all kinds of improvisation, some types of theatre etc.).

This Symposium offers possibilities of communication and project realization in public environment by artists working in twenty different media types.

We are looking forward to applications from creative people in visual arts (painting, photography, video art, installation, theatre improvisation and other kinds of media).

Application should be mailed to: guna.kalnaca@lkk.gov.lv or sent by post:
